the pledge

The Alternative Canon Pledge was created for student ensembles in Oxford, to encourage them to think about more diverse programmes. We took our inspiration from the Keychange Pledge, which the Oxford University Music Society signed in January 2024. We recognise that each group has its own limitations in terms of budget and repertoire available - so we ask each individual to suggest a target which will work for them. If you would like to read a template copy, or if you represent a student-led ensemble who would like to sign the Pledge, please get in touch.

“we pledge to diversify our programming by including a significant number of works composed by individuals from marginalised backgrounds, including but not limited to women, composers of colour, LGBTQ+ composers, and other underrepresented groups.”
